Shop Till You Drop…and Why Women Love It

Why do women love to shop?  Please note, that by shopping I am not discussing the mundane grocery shopping or school supply shopping, I am speaking of Shopping in it’s purest form, such as clothes and accessories and jewelry shopping.  I am sure it is a question that has popped up many many times.  What makes shopping so appealing to women?  It is certainly a question that I have pondered as I am handing over my credit card.  I could offer you countless theories and an abundance of research into the supposed genetic and predisposed reasons that women shop, but I won’t bore you with the details.   From my point of view as a self proclaimed shopaholic and a trendy jewelry business owner, the reasons are much more simple than that.

“Whoever said money can’t buy happiness simply didn’t know where to go shopping.” (Bo Derek)

1) Shopping releases our happy endorphins:   It’s true, shopping is just plain fun!  Retail therapy is akin to happiness!  Ever had a bad day at work and then decide to stop at the mall to pick up a few things?  Instant Happy!  I know I have mentally prepared for a stressful week by promising myself (in my head of course) a shopping spree on saturday as a way of rewarding myself.  Let’s face it women, we are wired differently from most men.  Men look at shopping as a means to an end, we look at it as an experience we can’t wait to have.

“I always say shopping is cheaper than a psychiatrist. ” (Tammy Faye Bakker)

2) Shopping is a sport:  Now look, I know what you are thinking, baseball is a sport, shopping is not.  In response to that, I disagree!  What women hasn’t gotten immense pleasure in knowing she is the first in her group to wear the “it” jeans or have the “it” jewelry accessory?

Shopping brings out the competitive nature in all of us.  Think clearance sales.  Have you ever stepped back from a clearance rack and watched the women fight over the last item in that color or size?  On that end, I have been guilty of walking through the store and holding onto that blouse that I probably won’t end up buying, but just in case, I don’t want anyone else to have it either.  What about sticking that last size medium across the store in another rack of totally unrelated clothes so nobody can find it in case you change your mind?  Come on ladies we have all been there and scoring the last one is like winning the world series.

“Shopping is a woman thing. It’s a contact sport like football. Women enjoy the scrimmage, the noisy crowds, the danger of being trampled to death, and the ecstasy of the purchase.”

3) Shopping is a social event: Women look at shopping as a fun way to get together with their friends.  Have you ever heard a man call up his friend and ask him to go shopping for clothes together? I certainly haven’t.  Shopping is a great way to spend time together and catch up on each other’s lives.  What better way to spend the day than shopping with good friends, and after all, we all need someone to tell us our but doesn’t look fat in those jeans :) .
